Shoemaking for Film 5 Day Intensive Course - The First Of Its Kind!

At Lonsdale Leather we have had some of the biggest productions in North America shop with us for leather and supplies over the last 20 years. We will share our experiences in working with these films and designers.
Course Schedule
10:00AM - 6:00PM: Saturday August 1st
(Day one will be spent going through and studying some of the most iconic designs that have shaped shoe making in film. We will learn why they were created, how they were created and by whom). We will talk about designers, directors, buyers and how it goes from a concept to a big screen.
10:00AM - 6:00PM: Sunday August 2nd
(Day two) - We will focus on design. Taking what you learned from day one, we will now design our own iconic shoes. We will design a concept for a past film, upcoming feature or imaginary work. From there we will choose lasts, materials and start on patterns.
10:00AM - 6:00PM: Monday August 3rd
(Day three) - Construction
10:00AM - 6:00PM: Tuesday August 4th
(Day four) - Construction
10:00AM - 6:00PM: Wednesday August 5th
(Day five) - Complete your footwear.
This is a very comprehensive course that will allow you to learn all aspects of hand made shoemaking from theory, sourcing, development, drawing on the shoe last, through developing a pattern, cutting and working with leather, sewing, lasting the shoe, attaching the sole and heel and finishing techniques.
What will we learn?
In each lesson we will progress with our own pair of oxford shoes, going through the entire process from pattern to finishes shoes. Through this project each student will gain knowledge and hands on experience in order to continue making shoes and exploring the craft of shoe making on their own or with one of our intermediate or advanced courses.
It is important to understand that the shoemaking profession is very complex and requires the knowledge of several different techniques:

Pattern Making- how to choose a shoe last, draw the model and create patterns for each section.

Clicking- how to work with leather (or other materials), cut the sections and prepare them for sewing (skiving and folding)

Sewing- how to operate different leather sewing machines and achieve clean seams.

Lasting- how to pull the sewn model back onto the last.

Shoe components- how to measure and prepare: insoles, stiffeners, soles and heels.

Finishing- how to clean and finalize the pair of shoes to look fabulous (insert sock lining and leather treatment).
Course outline:
a. Film and Pop Culture footwear exploration. We want you to understand how designers worked with the film to develop what you see on the big screen.
b. Material sourcing and working within limitations. We have had some of the biggest films in the past 10 years purchasing materials and supplies for their films. Sometimes what they initially dream is unrealistic or not possible. So we have to find alternatives, work arounds and creative solutions.
c. Learning about what is required to make footwear for film. They may need to jump out of a burning building in stilettos... how can we help the actors while still looking fabulous?! Understanding requirements for design and making them functional, realistic and period correct.
1. Pattern Making-Introduction to the world of shoe lasts, taping and marking the base points on the last, drawing the shoe model.
2. Pattern Making- Peeling the model, developing the patterns – mean form, working standard, upper patterns.
3. Pattern Making- Developing the lining and stiffeners. Choosing leather for the project.
4. Clicking- Understanding leather, placing and cutting the model patterns.
5. Clicking- Preparing the parts of the shoe for sewing – skiving, folding, gluing and adding reinforcing tapes.
6. Closing- Sewing the model – Upper and Lining sewing, the right order and techniques.
7. Closing- Attaching the lining to the upper. Positioning the insole and sewn model onto the last.
8. Lasting- Hand lasting the lining and attaching stiffeners (toe and counter).
9. Lasting- Hand lasting the upper, sanding and preparing for sole attachment.
10. Finishing- Attaching the sole and heel, cleaning techniques and inserting the insock.

Who is it suitable for?
For anyone who wants to learn how to make handmade shoes - no prior knowledge is required but this is a great opportunity for someone looking to boost their resume or get into Shoe Making for Film.
About Nina Rozin.
I am Nina Rozin, shoe designer, shoemaker and teacher for over 20 years.
A little about me:
- I have a degree in design and technology for the footwear industry from the famous college: CORDWAINERS AT LONDON COLLEGE OF FASHION.
- In 2002 I was accepted as a member of THE GUILD OF MASTER CRAFTSMEN in England
- I worked as a last maker for the prestigious shoe company JOHN LOBB THE BOOTMAKER in London, where I even repaired shoes for Prince Charles.
- For about two years I worked in a crazy studio in London where we created unconventional shoes for fashion shows for LONDON FASHION WEEK.
- In 2003 I worked in stunning Venice, Italy, as an assistant shoe maker in a unique boutique offering custom shoes for art and fashion. My work took me to Florence, Bologna and Milan.
- In 2005 I established my studio offering design, development and consulting for shoe companies, in Tel Aviv, Israel.
- In 2007 I established “The Guild” school of footwear and accessory design. I held my position as a professional manager (developing study programs, teaching, community management, professional guidance and content) until 2018.
- In 2016 I established a professional consultancy agency “FASHION SOLUTIONS” which provides solutions for companies in the fashion industry (small to medium). I also expanded to providing services to hi-tech companies whose products are aimed at the fashion market.
- One of my greatest loves, all these years, is to create shoes and leather accessories with my own hands. There is no substitute for touching the material.
- In 2018 I decided to open my own private workshops and teach everything I know. My shoemaking courses travel the world and I collaborate with various studios in teaching the craft. My courses are a combination of traditional work with a modern shoemaking approach.

Policies:
Admin Fee:
There is a non-refundable $120 admin fee for all shoemaking workshops. This helps us cover the cost of charges accrued from cancellations.
Cancellation Policy:
Cancellations or rescheduling must be made at least 14 days in advance. Refunds will not be given if cancellation or rescheduling happens within that window.
Sick Policy:
In the case of a student becoming sick for this course, please get in touch with us as soon as possible, and our instructor will get in contact with you to figure out an alternative make-up session.
Rescheduling Policy:
If you need to reschedule, please email us no sooner than 14 days prior to the start of the course. Rescheduling may not be possible if notice is not given at least 2 weeks out.
Age Policy:
Participants must be 15 years of age or older to take this class.
